Common Sprinkler System Problems and Solutions
Addressing frequent issues with your sprinkler system keeps your lawn hydrated and prevents bigger, costlier problems down the line. Here are some common challenges residents might face with their sprinkler systems and straightforward solutions to keep the water flowing just right.
Broken or Damaged Sprinkler Heads
Identifying Signs: Look for heads that are not popping up, spraying unevenly, or visibly damaged.
Clogged Sprinkler Heads
Clogged heads are a common nuisance, especially after the dormant winter months or during fall when debris is plentiful.
Causes: Accumulation of dirt, sand, or lawn debris.
Cleaning Process:
Shut off the water to the sprinkler system.
Remove the spray head and disassemble it to access the filter.
Rinse the filter under clean water; use a soft brush for stubborn debris.
Reassemble and reattach the head, then test to ensure it’s working properly.
Diagnosing Valve Problems
Valve issues can disrupt the flow to entire zones within your sprinkler system, making them critical to diagnose and fix promptly.
Symptoms of Valve Failure: Unresponsive zones, leaking around the valve box, or unusually low water pressure in one zone.
Troubleshooting Steps:
Inspect for any visible signs of damage or leaking around the valves.
Listen for hissing or gurgling sounds that indicate a leak even if no water is visible.
If a valve fails to open, check the solenoid and replace if necessary; this component often fails before the valve itself.
For leaks, replacing worn seals or the entire valve may be necessary, depending on the severity of the damage.
